UNIQLO Tate Play: Rasheed Araeen: Shamiyaana Food for Thought: Thought for Change

Freddie Faulkenberry Courtesy Rasheed Araeen and Grosvenor Gallery.

‘I’m trying to take art back to its roots, and the roots of art lie in the creativity of the people. Even cooking is a creative act.’

Shamiyaana: Food for Thought, Thought for Change is a participatory art installation which functions as a communal dining experience. This summer, Rasheed Araeen and UNIQLO Tate Play invites you to share food and engage in conversation with those around you, to form new relationships and encounter different perspectives.

First presented in Athens in 2017, Shamiyaana speaks to Araeen’s desire for art to be part of everyday life; that activities as routine as reading, playing, talking or eating be seen as opportunities for collective creativity.

Shamiyaana’s structure is based on a tent used for marriage ceremonies across the Indian subcontinent and West Asia, where guests are welcomed and served food. The symmetrical, brightly coloured tents echo the geometries of Zero to Infinity currently as part of UNIQLO Tate Play: Rasheed Araeen, Zero to Infinity. In both works, Araeen explores the possibilities of egalitarian spaces and breaking hierarchical social structures.
