Much of Amorales’s work explores the culture and values of his native Mexico. He is fascinated by contemporary rituals, both secular and religious, and particularly the role of costume and what it signifies. He is perhaps best known for a series of performance-based works inspired by Mexican wrestling, with its masked heroes and villains. This self-portrait, in which he presents himself as a masked figure, tells us less about his real identity than it does about the extent to which one’s appearance is open to manipulation as fiction.
