Aberayron is on the coast of Cardiganshire, Wales. The artist wrote (31 January 1962): ‘It was painted in April 1954, begun in the evening on the spot (looking inland from the sea wall). I was staying for a few days alone at the Red Lion. I did a drawing of the same subject, which I made use of in going on with the picture at home.’
